Renewable Energy

What are the required energy efficient measures, for Renewable Energies to be installed?

You must undertake a number of energy efficient measures before you are eligible to apply for a grant from the Low Carbon Buildings Programme.  These measures will ensure that you are minimising your energy requirements.  Before applying, they will require you to have the following:-

(a)    Insulated the whole of the loft of the property to meet current building regulations e.g at least 270mm of mineral wool loft insulation or suitable alternative.

(b)   Installed Cavity Wall Insulation. (If you have cavity Walls.)

(c)    Fitted Low Energy Light Bulbs in all appropriate light fittings.

(d)   Installed basic controls for your heating system to include a room thermostat along side a programmer or timer.

What Renewable Energy Products are available to me?

TECHNOLOGYHow does it work?

Solar Photovoltaics (PV)

Solar photovoltaic (PV) uses energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting. PV requires only daylight - not direct sunlight - to generate electricity.

Wind Turbines

Wind power is proportional to the cube of the wind's speed, so relatively minor increases in speed result in large changes in potential output. Individual turbines vary in size and power output from a few hundred watts to two or three megawatts (as a guide, a typical domestic system would be 2.5 - 6 kilowatts, depending on the location and size of the home).

Small Hydro

Hydro-power systems convert potential energy stored in water held at height to kinetic energy (or the energy used in movement) to turn a turbine to produce electricity.

Solar Thermal Hot Water

Solar water heating systems use heat from the sun to work alongside your conventional water heater. The technology is well developed with a large choice of equipment to suit many applications.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) transfer heat from the ground into a building to provide space heating and, in some cases, to pre-heat domestic hot water.
For every unit of electricity used to pump the heat, 3-4 units of heat are produced.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps (ASHP) absorb heat from the outside to heat buildings. It is even possible for air source heat pumps to extract useful heat from air at temperatures as low as minus 15°C.

Biomass

Biomass is often called 'bioenergy' or 'biofuels' & are produced from organic materials, either directly from plants or indirectly from industrial, commercial, domestic or agricultural products. 1.)Biofuels fall into two main categories: Woody biomass incl. forest products, untreated wood products, energy crops, short rotation coppice (SRC), e.g. willow. 2.) Non-woody biomass incl. animal waste, industrial & biodegradable municipal products from food processing & high energy crops e.g. sugar cane & maize.

How do I get the Renewable Energy Installed?

First of all, you need to ensure your property is energy efficient.  Correct levels of insulation & draught proofing are essential to ensure the property’s energy requirements & your own comfort levels are maintained.  For insulation services & information on grants for their services, we recommend AlternEnergy (www.alternenergy.co.uk) or Warm Front ( www.warmfront.co.uk) as a good place to start within the North West Region.  Some people may be able to obtain free insulation to their property, as Manchester City Council have teamed up to provide free insulation to people if you are either over 60 years old, receiving benefits, or have a child under 6 years old.  Every council district will offer different levels of funding for their own area, so we will assist you further on your specific requirements & information on what might be eligible to you in your specific region.

Only certified installers can install accredited renewable technologies, in order for non-repayable grants to be eligible to you & interest free loans to be granted.  For detailed information on each renewable energy option available to you, we recommend that you conduct thorough research in this area before deciding which option you want to install.  C Red Consultancy are able to discuss everything with you, from start to finish, offering free advice on all matters to do with energy efficiency & renewable energy.  We want to assist you as you help the environment as much as possible, so we can provide you with an energy assessment on your property before work starts and after work has been completed.

Alternenergy Ltd (www.alternenergy.co.uk) is a local accredited installer recommended by C Red Consultancy, for works carried out in the North West Region.  We know Alternenergy provide very professional & reliable service in all areas of renewable energy, as they are very experienced & knowledgeable in the renewable energy market & able to install all of the 8 renewable products listed earlier; whereas a lot of companies seem to just specialise in one area.  Alternenergy will assist you in installing the correct product for your property & project manage any domestic or commercial renewable energy development you are wishing to undertake, from beginning to end.
